About Dr. Machaba Letswalo

Field of Specialisation: Material Science

Research interests

Dr. Letswalo Machaba Leanyatsa Abraham is an accomplished Experimental Condensed Matter Physicist and serves as the Deputy Head of Department for Teaching and Learning in the Physics Department. His research is primarily focused on the development and application of luminescent materials, including rare earth-doped inorganic phosphors, ZnO, fluoride, organic phosphors, and perovskites. He has extensive experience in these materials for applications such as optoelectronics, displays, phototherapy, solar cells, water purification through photocatalytic methods, and super-capacitance anode lithium battery storage. He is also dedicated to supervising doctoral and master’s students working on cutting-edge research in luminescent nanomaterials, which are employed in a wide range of technologies from solar cells to solid-state lighting, phototherapy, and more.

Teaching Physics:

  • Building Science 1
  • Analytical Chemistry 1, 2 & 4
