About Prof Keyan Tomaselli
Keyan G Tomaselli is Distinguished Professor, Dean’s Office, Faculty of Humanities, University of Johannesburg, administered from the Dept of Communication and Media, School of Communication, Auckland Park campus.
He is author of many books, e.g., The Cinema of Apartheid (1988, 2014), Richard Green in South African Film: Forging Creative new Directions (2023), Encountering Modernity: 20th Century South African Film (2006); Appropriating Images: The Semiotics of Visual Representation (1999) and co-editor Cultural Icons (2009). He is founding editor, now co-editor of Critical Arts: South-North Cultural and Media Studies and of the Journal of African Cinemas. He is author also of Contemporary Campus Life: Transformation, Manic Managerialism and Transformation (2021), a critical management studies satire of the modern university.
Tomaselli is Laureate Fellow, International Communicology Institute and currently chair of the Scholarly Publication Committee of the Academy of Science of South Africa. Tomaselli is also Honorary Professor, Centre for Trans-media and Trans-culture, Capital Normal University, Beijing, and Professor Emeritus and Fellow, University of Kwazulu-Natal.
Recipient of the Simon “Mabhunu” Sabela Award in the ‘Heroes and Legends’ category for his service to the South African film industry.
His interest is in Peirceian semiotics, reception analysis and translation as applied within the paradigm of cultural and media studies.
