About Prof Hanna Nel
Professor Hanna Nel, Associate Professor in the Department of Social Work, University of Johannesburg, has 30 years of experience in teaching, research and community outreach. She has taught on undergraduate and post graduate levels on work with individuals, groupwork, families, management and administration, poverty, research and social and community development. Her passion, however, is in the field of asset-based community-led development (ABCD), with focus on leadership, management and governance in this area. Furthermore, the establishment and development of Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and especially community-based organisations (CBOs) using an Appreciative Inquiry approach is another focus. She has published a book in 2010 with two colleagues from UNISA with the title: Introduction to participatory community practice. She has also published book chapters and articles in accredited journals with the primarily focus on community development. See publications below.
