About Prof MM Botha
Prof Monray Marsellus Botha is a full professor in the Department of Public Law. Prof Botha previously acted as Head of the Department of Mercantile Law at the UJ from October 2022 until July 2023. Before joining the UJ again in January 2022, he acted as deputy dean and was Head of the Department of Mercantile Law, both at the University of Pretoria.
He holds the following degrees: BLC (Pret), BCom (Hons) (Pret), LLB (Pret), LLM (Pret), MCOM (UJ) and LLD (NWU), as well as the following diplomas: AIPSA Diploma (AIPSA/Pret), Diploma in Alternative Dispute Resolution (AFSA/Pret) and Diploma in Corporate Law (UJ). He has also completed two leadership qualifications through the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS). The title of his LLD thesis is “Employee participation and voice in companies: A legal perspective”. On 06 March 2017, he delivered his inaugural address entitled “First do no harm!” On oaths, social contracts and other promises: Navigating the labyrinth!
He is also an NRF-rated researcher, holding a C2 rating since 1 January 2018. His re-rating as a C2-rated reached was confirmed effective 01 January 2024. Prof Botha has 22 years of experience in the tertiary academic environment. He worked at several universities, including the University of Pretoria (UP) and the North-West University (NWU). Prof Botha delivered multiple national and international conference papers/seminars. In addition, he has published multiple nationally and internationally accredited research contributions focusing on labour law and company law and fields that intersect with these. He has remained an active researcher and has published in various areas of law, even while in management. His main areas of interest are labour law, corporate law, corporate governance and corporate social responsibility. Subjects he has taught include labour law, commercial law, business law, specific contracts, company law, alternative dispute resolution, transnational business law, cyber law, e-commerce, and tax law.
