Course format:

All courses have been designed to ensure a balanced mix of knowledge, practical skills and insight.

French 1A/B (entry with no or little previous knowledge of French)

Purpose:

A balanced learning base consisting of reading, writing, listening and speaking skills
Cultural insight into France and Francophone countries and
An introduction to literature.
The language competencies of these modules are aligned with the requirements of level A1 and A2 as set out by the “Common European framework of reference for languages”.

French 2A/B (entry with first year university French or Grade 12 French passed with a minimum of 60% or equivalent)
Purpose:

The acquisition of intermediate French language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking)
The study of French/ Francophone literature, cinema and civilisation on an intermediate level.
The language competencies of this module are aligned with the requirements of level B1.1 and level B1.2 as set out by the “Common European framework of reference for languages”.
French 3A/B (entry with second year university French or equivalent)

Purpose:

The acqu​isition of advanced French language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking).
The in depth study of selected canonical works chosen from 17 – 21th century French prose, poetry , theatre and film, which may include African texts and/or films in French. Attention will be given to the socio-political, historical and literary background of the works chosen.
The language competencies of these module are aligned with the requirements of level B2.1 and B2.2 as set out by the “Common European framework of reference for languages”.
