Linguistics 3A & B

In Linguistics 3 you will be introduced to the theory and practice of translation, interpreting and text editing. In the translation and interpreting components you will gain insights in the major approaches in translation and interpreting studies, and in the text editing component you will focus on the interface between text linguistics and text editing. As dictionary and terminology work forms an integral part of any language practitioner’s daily tasks, we will also pay attention to the basic principles of lexicography and terminology. ​

Apart from these theoretical and practical approaches to translation, interpreting and text editing, you will also acquire skills in electronic document management and translation memory software. We will also familiarise you with various aspects of translation, interpreting and text editing as a profession.

A hallmark of our Linguistics 3 module is our internship programme. During the winter recess, you will gain practical experience in the fields of translation, interpreting and text editing. You may choose which field you want to specialise in: translation and text editing, or court interpreting. If you opt for translation and text editing, you will work in a language office. If you opt for court interpreting, you will be placed in a court in the Johannesburg area. In both instances, you will be supervised by experienced translators, text editors and court interpreters. Successful completion of the internship will provide you with important records you may attach to your curriculum vitae when you apply for work after graduating: a report of your performance, a certificate of attendance and, in the case of translation and text editing, a portfolio of the work you have done during the internship period.
