Language Practice 2A & B

The aim of the Language Practice 2 module is to introduce you to the most important skills in order to function in the language practice environment. This includes exposing you to real life language practice tasks and to teach you the skills and tricks of the language practice trade. ​

The first semester introduces you to various facets of the world in which the language practitioner functions and the various tasks and roles that such a professional language practitioner will fulfil. In the first term, the focus is on general, mostly electronic, tools and skills that you will need as a language practitioner. In the second term, we focus on editing and on the tools that form part of the editor’s kit. In this way, you will experience the intricate relationship that exists between knowledge, skills and (electronic) tools.

During the second semester, you are introduced to practical aspects of translating and interpreting. The translation component focuses on translating texts for specific purposes, including an introduction to the translation of general texts, applying translation strategies and learning to work with computer-assisted translation tools. The interpreting component focuses on community interpreting. Here you are introduced to the practice of interpreting and focus on topics such as court interpreting, medical interpreting, ethical considerations in interpreting, sight translation and a brief introduction to short consecutive interpreting.
