Diplomacy is all about the ‘how’, or method of interaction. Here SARChI’s research, engagement and supervision is focused on the role of state and non-state actors in negotiation and mediation as well as the evolving practice of diplomacy today. This includes elements such as economic diplomacy, climate diplomacy and para-diplomacy.

The focus on diplomacy is inherently linked to the work we undertake on foreign policy including:

  • The domestic source of foreign policy;
  • Pan-Africanism and African agency in the 21st Century;
  • South Africa’s African Agenda;
  • South-South cooperation agenda;
  • Strategic relations with the North;
  • Active global governance and multilateralism;
  • Bilateralism and area studies.

SARChI welcomes prospective students of diplomacy and foreign policy and invites practitioners and scholars to dialogue in furthering this important field.
