Biography
Prof Paul Mativenga holds a Chair in Multi-scale & Sustainable Manufacturing and is Vice Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering at The University of Manchester (UoM), in the United Kingdom and Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa. At Manchester he is also the Faculty academic lead for Social Responsibility, Environmental Sustainability, Equality and Diversity. Prior to his current appointment, Paul has served as Director of Research and during this term he was responsible for strategy on Research Excellence (Outputs, Grant Income and Impact) as driven by the requirements of the United Kingdom Research Excellence Framework.

Paul is excited about developing engineering science solutions to the major challenges of resource efficiency and industrial sustainability. He has worked on both research council and industry funded projects with Rolls Royce Plc, BAE Systems and Microsystems UK, Teer Coatings Ltd. As Principal Investigator, in 2010, he successfully completed the Extended Life Microtooling by Advanced Coatings Technology (ELMACT) project, a large grant with seven industrial partners. In this project he led the development of a number of micro manufacturing solutions for the UK industry. He was involved in the UK multi-million pound Strategic
Affordable Manufacturing with Leading Environment Technologies (SAMULET) project led by Rolls Royce Plc and his group focused on laser cleaning. He worked on the Efficient X-sector use of HeterogeneoUs MatErials in Manufacturing (EXHUME) on composite recycling funded by EPSRC through a sandpit. Paul serves on a number of editorial boards of leading international journals in manufacturing and is Associate Editor for two Q1 rated journals for Elsevier and Sage. He is a Member of the International Academy of Production Engineering, College International pour la Recherche en Productique (CIRP). The CIRP was founded in 1951 with the aim to address scientifically, through international co-operation, issues related to modern production science and technology. Paul is currently working on a £2.1M EPSRC project EP/R020957/1, “New Industrial Systems: Manufacturing Immortality” and is the Principal Investigator leading a collaboration of four universities, on EPSRC project EP/ S018190/1, on low carbon manufacturing with lasers. His research is addresses the Net Zero agenda, and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (DGs) 6, 9, 12 and 17
