Food Security Strategies

Mitigating the feminisation of poverty through food gardens in Gauteng is a social development priority of the SARCHi Chair. Professor Tanusha Raniga is a collaborator on a research partnership with Ecological Intelligence/Siyakhana/Exxaro School Programme, led by Professor Michael Rudolph, Director of UJ’s  . The Chair has supported the establishment of two food gardens at primary schools in Johannesburg and Tshwane schools. Tania Sani, a PhD candidate under the supervision of Professor Raniga, coordinates the involvement of migrant single mothers, teachers and learners in food garden projects implemented in Yeoville.

The project aims to reduce the feminisation of poverty through increased access to nutritious food, enhanced livelihood opportunities for participating migrant single mothers, and improved educational outcomes for learners involved in the gardening projects. Moreover, the project aims to foster community resilience and environmental sustainability through its activities.
