Research Interest 

Dr Monama’s research interests lie in water and wastewater treatment, waste valorization, circular economy, entrepreneurship education, water-energy nexus and engineering management. Her research addresses fundamental and managerial challenges within the water and energy sectors. She conducts multidisciplinary research that provides opportunity for local and international collaboration whilst addressing real world problems. She is also pursuing the scholarship of teaching and learning, with the quest to contribute towards closing the innovation chasm in Higher Education.

Biography 

Dr Thembisile Monama (Mahlangu) is a Senior Lecturer in the Postgraduate School of Engineering Managment. She holds a doctoral degree in Chemical Engineering from the Tshwane University of Technology. Prior to joining UJ, Dr Monama was a researcher at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, then a Lecturer and Deputy HOD for the Durban University of Technology’s Chemical Engineering Department. Dr Monama received several awards throughout her career. Her drive towards technology transfer and commercialization was realized when she won a pitch and was awarded to participate in the Imvelisi Business Ideation Bootcamp (2018). She was then selected to take part in the SA-France Higher Education week (2022). Her passion for entrepreneurship education also led to her participation in the Erasmus+ Capacity Building Project for Higher Education (CBHE) facilitated by THENSA and OBREAL-Global Observatory (2023). She was recognized as an Outstanding Emerging Female Researcher in the Faculty of Engineering and The Built Environment (2023). She aspires that her research activities contribute towards addressing the UN’s sustainable developmental goals, water and sustainability, whilst actively exploring 4IR application opportunities. Dr Monama hopes to influence change and innovation through her role in Engineering Management and postgraduate supervision
