About Ms. Tasmiya Chandlay
Tasmiya Chandlay is an architectural practitioner, artist, design researcher, toy and game developer, and lecturer from Johannesburg, South Africa. She is a University of Johannesburg Department of Architecture and Graduate School of Architecture (GSA) alum.
Through her current role as a lecturer in the Department of Architecture, Tasmiya aspires to revolutionise architectural education and inspire students to look beyond institutionally presented narratives and ignite a passion for critical thinking and independent perspectives, encouraging students to shape their own narratives.
Driven by a profound interest in the institutions of our making and destruction, Tasmiya’s research probes the intersections of identity, culture, background, and biases in societal building. Her exploration aims to dismantle and unravel the complex dynamics influencing both the architectural landscape and the communities it serves and/or creates. Delving into the hidden forces shaping architectural and establishment decisions, Tasmiya aspires to empower architects and communities by envisioning a future where design fosters inclusivity, equity, and the authentic representation of diverse voices within our built environment.
