The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is committed to supporting students from the lowest income brackets, specifically those within the bottom 20% of household incomes in South Africa, to ensure they can successfully complete their studies. This commitment is demonstrated through targeted financial aid programmes, meal assistance schemes, and initiatives aimed at alleviating student debt.

National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS)

UJ collaborates with the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), a government-funded initiative designed to assist students from low-income households. NSFAS provides comprehensive funding that covers tuition fees, accommodation, study materials, and living allowances. Eligibility is determined through a means test, focusing on students whose combined household income does not exceed a specified threshold. This ensures that financial support is directed towards those most in need, enabling them to pursue higher education without the burden of financial constraints.

Meal Assistance Programme

Recognising the critical link between nutrition and academic performance, UJ has implemented a meal assistance programme in partnership with the Gift of the Givers Foundation. This initiative provides approximately 2,100 students with balanced meals twice daily, ensuring that those from the most disadvantaged backgrounds have access to essential nutrition. The university allocates significant funds annually to sustain this programme, reflecting its dedication to student well-being.

SRC Trust Fund

To further support students facing financial hardships, the Student Representative Council (SRC) Trust Fund offers supplementary assistance. This fund is designed to aid students who encounter unforeseen financial difficulties that may jeopardise their academic progress. While the available funds are limited, they are strategically allocated to provide maximum impact, ensuring that deserving students receive the necessary support to continue their education.

Debt Relief Initiatives

UJ is actively engaged in fundraising efforts to address the issue of student debt, which disproportionately affects those from low-income families. The university aims to raise substantial funds to assist students who lack the financial means to settle their outstanding fees. This initiative not only facilitates continued access to education but also enables graduates to enter the workforce without the encumbrance of debt, thereby contributing positively to society.

Through these comprehensive programmes and initiatives, the University of Johannesburg demonstrates a robust commitment to empowering students from the lowest income quintiles. By addressing financial barriers, providing essential resources, and promoting academic success, UJ plays a pivotal role in transforming the lives of students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
