The University of Johannesburg (UJ) actively engages with the local community by providing access to its sports facilities. These facilities are available for hire to external organisations, including local schools and the general public, for various events such as conferences, training sessions, and sports functions. This initiative fosters community involvement and promotes a healthy lifestyle among Johannesburg residents.

Facility Access and Booking:

UJ’s sports venues are accessible to external parties through a formal booking process. Interested groups can apply to use the facilities by completing the necessary forms and submitting them to the university’s sports department. This structured approach ensures that the facilities are utilised effectively and are available to a broad spectrum of community members.

Examples of Community Engagement:

  • International Events: UJ’s stadia have hosted international athletes, such as the Serbian team, which trained at the A.W. Muller Stadium during the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup. This highlights UJ’s capacity to support high-profile events and its commitment to contributing to global sporting communities.
  • Local Tournaments: The Soweto Sports Complex and the Westdene Stadium have been venues for university cup competitions broadcast on national television. These events not only showcase local talent but also engage the community by providing opportunities to participate in and attend significant sporting events.

Gymnasium Access:

UJ Gymnasia are premier fitness centres equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and staffed by experienced instructors. While primarily serving UJ students, staff, and alumni, these facilities contribute to the overall well-being of the university community. The gyms offer various membership options, including monthly and weekly rates, making them accessible to a wider audience.

In summary, the University of Johannesburg demonstrates a strong commitment to community engagement by sharing its sports and other facilities with the public. Through structured access and a variety of events, UJ fosters a collaborative environment that benefits both the university and the broader Johannesburg community.
