The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is committed to promoting lifelong learning by offering a range of public resources accessible to individuals not formally enrolled at the university. These initiatives encompass free online courses, access to certain campus facilities, and opportunities for community engagement.

Free Online Courses

UJ provides several Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) that are freely available to the public:

  • Artificial Intelligence in the 4IR: This course introduces participants to artificial intelligence, its applications, and its implications for society and the future of work in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. It is designed to be completed in approximately 150 hours over a semester. Upon successful completion, participants receive a digital certificate.
  • African Insights: This course offers an introduction to African intellectual traditions and contemporary debates. It aims to provide a deeper understanding of the continent’s diverse perspectives. Participants who complete the course successfully are awarded a digital certificate.
  • Introduction to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): This programme provides an overview of the 17 SDGs, exploring their significance and the role they play in global sustainability efforts. The course is fully online, and upon successful completion, participants receive a digital certificate.
  • Financial Literacy – Be Money Wise: This course aims to equip individuals with essential financial management skills, covering topics such as budgeting, saving, and investing. It is available online, free of charge, and includes a digital certificate upon completion.

Access to Campus Facilities

UJ extends access to certain campus facilities for public use:

  • Libraries: Members of the public can access UJ libraries by applying for external membership. While external members do not have remote access to electronic resources, they can utilise on-campus facilities and resources.
  • Sports Facilities: UJ’s sports facilities are available for hire by external parties for events such as conferences, training sessions, and other functions. These facilities are located across UJ’s four campuses in Soweto, Auckland Park, and Doornfontein.
  • Arts and Cultural Venues: UJ’s art galleries and theatres host a variety of exhibitions and performances that are open to the public, fostering cultural engagement within the community.

Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning

UJ is dedicated to community engagement through various initiatives:

  • Public Events and Lectures: The university regularly organises public lectures, workshops, and seminars on diverse topics, inviting community members to participate and benefit from academic discourse.
  • Continuing Education Programmes (CEPs): UJ offers a range of short courses and programmes designed for individuals seeking to enhance their skills and knowledge. While some of these programmes may require fees, they are open to the public and cover various fields of study.

Through these initiatives, the University of Johannesburg demonstrates its commitment to providing accessible educational resources and fostering a culture of lifelong learning within the broader community.
