The University of Johannesburg (UJ) actively supports low-carbon innovation by assisting start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) focused on fostering a low-carbon economy. This commitment is primarily facilitated through the Process, Energy & Environmental Technology Station (UJ PEETS), established in 2010 under the auspices of the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) and the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI).

Mandate and Services of UJ PEETS

UJ PEETS aims to enhance the competitiveness of industries within the green circular economy by providing specialised knowledge and facilitating technology transfer. The station serves as a nexus between academia, industry, and government, offering a suite of services to support low-carbon innovation:

  • Engineering Consultation and Process Optimisation: Providing expert advice to optimise industrial processes, thereby improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions.
  • Product and Process Development: Assisting in the development and improvement of products and processes that align with low-carbon objectives.
  • Prototype Development and Testing: Offering facilities and expertise for the assembly and testing of prototypes, enabling innovators to refine and validate their low-carbon technologies.
  • Training and Capacity Building: Conducting workshops and training sessions to equip entrepreneurs and industry stakeholders with the skills necessary to implement sustainable practices.

These services are designed to foster innovation and support the growth of SMEs committed to low-carbon technologies.

Impact and Collaborative Initiatives

Since its inception, UJ PEETS has made significant contributions to the green economy:

  • Support to SMEs: The station has provided subsidised engineering services to over 1,000 green economy projects, assisting SMEs in areas ranging from research and development to prototype demonstration. In the 2018 and 2019 financial years alone, UJ PEETS supported 150 SMEs and over 1,000 individuals, facilitating the implementation of sustainable practices.
  • Greening Public Transport: Collaborating with international partners and the City of Johannesburg, UJ PEETS supported the rollout of 150 vehicles powered by natural gas derived from waste. This initiative aimed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fuel costs in the public transport sector.
  • Water Conservation Projects: In response to national water shortages, UJ PEETS assisted an SME in demonstrating water conservation strategies to Gauteng municipalities. Innovative techniques, such as an automated water balance structure, were employed to address supply and demand challenges.

Funding Opportunities and Research Support

UJ PEETS also disseminates information about funding opportunities and research initiatives aimed at low-carbon innovation. For instance, the station has promoted calls for research proposals focusing on methane emission reduction and climate-smart agriculture, providing platforms for innovators to secure financial support for their projects.

In summary, the University of Johannesburg, through UJ PEETS, offers comprehensive assistance to start-ups and SMEs dedicated to advancing a low-carbon economy. By providing technical support, facilitating collaborations, and promoting funding opportunities, UJ plays a pivotal role in nurturing low-carbon innovations that contribute to environmental sustainability and economic growth.
