The University of Johannesburg (UJ) offers a range of energy efficiency services tailored to support local industries, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), in enhancing their energy efficiency and adopting clean energy solutions. These services are primarily facilitated through the Process, Energy & Environmental Technology Station (UJ PEETS), established in 2010 under the support of the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) via the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI).

Services Offered by UJ PEETS

UJ PEETS is dedicated to improving the competitiveness of industries within the green circular economy by providing specialised knowledge and technology transfer. The station serves as a conduit between academia, industry, and government, offering a variety of services aimed at promoting energy efficiency and sustainability:

  • Energy Efficiency Assessments: UJ PEETS conducts comprehensive evaluations of industrial processes to identify areas where energy consumption can be reduced. These assessments help businesses understand their energy usage patterns and implement strategies to enhance efficiency.
  • Engineering Consultation and Process Optimisation: The station provides expert engineering consultation to assist industries in optimising their processes. This includes system analysis and the development of innovative solutions to improve energy efficiency, thereby reducing operational costs and environmental impact.
  • Research and Development of Renewable Energy Options: UJ PEETS collaborates with industries to research and develop renewable energy technologies tailored to specific needs. This partnership fosters the adoption of clean energy solutions, contributing to the reduction of carbon footprints.
  • Workshops and Capacity Building: To promote knowledge sharing and skill development, UJ PEETS organises workshops and training sessions focused on energy efficiency and sustainable practices. These programmes are designed to equip industry stakeholders with the necessary tools to implement effective energy management strategies.

Impact and Reach

Since its inception, UJ PEETS has made significant strides in supporting the green economy:

  • Support to SMEs: The station has provided subsidised engineering services to over 1,000 green economy projects, assisting SMEs in areas ranging from research and development to prototype demonstration. In the 2018 and 2019 financial years alone, UJ PEETS supported 150 SMEs and over 1,000 individuals, facilitating the implementation of sustainable practices.
  • Collaborative Projects: UJ PEETS has engaged in collaborative projects with international partners and local municipalities. Notably, the station worked with the City of Johannesburg to roll out 150 vehicles powered by natural gas derived from waste, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fuel costs in public transport.

Accessibility of Services

While UJ PEETS offers subsidised services to SMEs, the availability of free or paid services may vary depending on the specific project requirements and funding structures. Industries interested in availing themselves of these services are encouraged to contact UJ PEETS directly to discuss potential collaborations and determine applicable costs.

In summary, the University of Johannesburg, through UJ PEETS, provides a comprehensive suite of energy efficiency services to local industries. These efforts underscore UJ’s commitment to fostering sustainable industrial practices and contributing to the growth of the green circular economy.
