The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is dedicated to creating an inclusive and accessible environment for individuals with disabilities. Through its comprehensive support services and infrastructure, UJ ensures that all students and staff have equitable access to educational opportunities and campus facilities.

Disability Services and Support

Operating within the Centre for Psychological Services and Career Development (PsyCaD), UJ’s Disability Services provide tailored support to students with disabilities. This includes confidential consultations, assistance with academic accommodations, and guidance on accessing various resources. The team collaborates closely with academic staff, residences, and campus health services to address individual needs effectively. Notable services encompass:

  • Academic Support: Facilitating concessions for tests and examinations, such as additional time or the use of assistive devices, and arranging accessible venues.
  • Assistive Technology: Offering training and advice on specialised hardware and software, with assistive devices available at PsyCaD offices and university libraries.
  • Alternative Format Materials: Providing study materials in accessible formats, including braille, audio, and electronic text, to accommodate diverse learning needs.
  • Mobility Assistance: Coordinating accessible transport solutions between campuses, residences, and lecture halls for individuals with mobility challenges.

Accessible Facilities

UJ is committed to ensuring that all campuses are equipped with facilities that cater to the needs of people with disabilities. This commitment is evident in the following provisions:

  • Library Research Labs: Each campus library houses specially equipped research labs designed to support students with disabilities. These labs offer adaptive technology and resources, with dedicated librarians and tutors available to assist in accessing library materials. For instance, the Auckland Park Kingsway (APK) Library’s lab is located on the second floor, adjacent to the journal section. citeturn0search9
  • Campus Infrastructure: UJ has undertaken significant efforts to enhance the physical accessibility of its campuses. The transformation of the central spine at the Auckland Park Kingsway Campus into a pedestrian-friendly walkway exemplifies this initiative, providing a safe and accessible route for all individuals.

Community and Awareness Initiatives

Beyond infrastructural and academic support, UJ actively promotes awareness and inclusivity through various initiatives:

  • Disability Unit Engagement: The Disability Unit maintains an active presence on social media platforms, such as Facebook, to disseminate information, share resources, and engage with the university community on matters related to disability support and inclusivity.
  • Collaborative Projects: UJ has partnered with organisations to enhance support for students with disabilities. A notable example is the collaboration with the Fuchs Foundation to establish a regional disability resource centre on the Soweto Campus, aimed at providing specialised resources and support services.

Through these comprehensive measures, the University of Johannesburg demonstrates its unwavering commitment to accessibility and inclusivity, ensuring that all members of its community can participate fully in academic and campus life.
