University Diversity, Equality, Equity and Inclusion Office and Committee:
UJ Transformation Unit / Division and UJ MEC Transformation Committee

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is deeply committed to fostering diversity, equity, inclusion, and human rights within its campus community. This commitment is operationalised through dedicated structures and leadership roles tasked with advising on and implementing related policies, programmes, and training.

Transformation Unit

Central to UJ’s efforts is the Transformation Unit, established to lead and coordinate institutional transformation processes. The unit’s purpose is to cultivate an inclusive, diverse, and enabling culture that aligns with UJ’s vision and strategic objectives. Its mission encompasses promoting multiple values, beliefs, and cultural viewpoints by:

  • Cultivating a culture of openness, transparency, and honesty.
  • Promoting equality of opportunity and respect for human dignity.
  • Adhering to principles of social justice and inclusion.
  • Encouraging diversity in all institutional practices.
  • Empowering individuals to reach their full potential.

The Transformation Unit is instrumental in implementing the Institutional Transformation Plan, which outlines strategic objectives and actions to advance transformation across various domains, including institutional culture, staffing, governance, and teaching and learning. This plan serves as a roadmap for embedding diversity and inclusion into the fabric of the university.

Diversity and Inclusion Team

Within the Transformation Unit, the Diversity and Inclusion Team plays a pivotal role in promoting an inclusive environment. Led by Ms. Ashmore Nkuna, the Manager for Diversity and Inclusion, the team is responsible for:

  • Supporting projects and events that promote social cohesion and inclusion, preparing students and staff to contribute responsibly to a democratic society.
  • Advocating for institutional approaches to transformation and related initiatives.
  • Conducting communication campaigns and awareness events, such as the Annual Diversity Week and dialogue sessions.
  • Ensuring curriculum transformation research focuses on decoloniality, inclusion, and addressing marginalisation in teaching and learning.
  • Developing and steering the implementation of social justice policies.

The team’s efforts are crucial in embedding diversity and inclusion into the university’s operations and culture.

Gender Equity Unit

UJ also houses a dedicated Gender Equity Unit within the Transformation Division. This unit is tasked with:

  • Designing programmes and providing professional support and training to address gender-related issues, including those affecting LGBTQ+ communities and gender-based violence.
  • Implementing a case management system for reporting incidents such as rape, sexual assault, harassment, and discrimination.
  • Conducting research and monitoring to inform and evaluate gender initiatives, ensuring they are grounded in data and best practices.

The Gender Equity Unit’s work is vital in creating a safe and equitable environment for all members of the UJ community.

Through these dedicated structures and leadership roles, the University of Johannesburg demonstrates a robust commitment to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and human rights on campus. These efforts ensure that all students and staff are supported in an environment that values and respects their diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
