The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is actively engaged in providing local education programmes and campaigns focused on climate change, encompassing areas such as risk assessment, impacts, mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction, and early warning systems. These initiatives are designed to equip students and professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to address the multifaceted challenges posed by climate change.

Short Learning Programmes (SLPs):

Recognising the need for continuous professional development, UJ offers SLPs tailored to impart specific competencies related to environmental sustainability:

These SLPs are designed to cater to both recent graduates and professionals seeking to enhance their expertise in environmental management and sustainability practices.

Community Engagement and Campaigns:

Beyond formal education, UJ is proactive in raising awareness and fostering community engagement on climate change issues:

  • Series of Symposiums on Climate Change: Organised by the Faculty of Health Sciences’ Department of Environmental Health in collaboration with the UJ Library, these symposiums feature student-led initiatives such as plays, poems, debates, and innovative presentations on climate change mitigation. These events aim to engage both the university community and the public in meaningful discussions on climate action. Collaborations with External Organisations: UJ’s climate change team has partnered with local entities like Padel Green to conduct environmental clean-up campaigns, exemplified by their joint effort at Port Plein Park. Such collaborations underscore UJ’s commitment to practical environmental stewardship and community involvement.

Through these comprehensive educational programmes and community-driven initiatives, the University of Johannesburg demonstrates a robust commitment to addressing climate change challenges at both local and global levels.
