UJ PEETS Gauteng Environmental Research Register (ERR)

The Gauteng Environmental Research Register (ERR), developed through a collaboration between the Gauteng Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment (GDARDE) and the University of Johannesburg’s Process, Energy & Environmental Technology Station (UJ PEETS), serves as a strategic platform for aligning research efforts with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By systematically cataloging and coordinating environmental research within the Gauteng province, the ERR enhances both local and international collaboration in data gathering and measurement pertinent to the SDGs.

International Collaboration and Data Gathering

The ERR facilitates international collaboration by providing a centralized repository of environmental research projects, enabling researchers from around the globe to access, contribute to, and utilize data pertinent to sustainable development. This collaborative approach ensures that research efforts are not duplicated and that findings are disseminated widely, promoting a global exchange of knowledge and best practices.

Contribution to Specific SDGs

The ERR’s research initiatives are aligned with several SDGs, demonstrating its commitment to sustainable development:

  • SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy: The register includes research focusing on renewable energy sources, energy efficiency, and the adoption of clean technologies, contributing to universal access to affordable and clean energy.
  • SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities: By addressing urbanization challenges through research on urban planning, transportation, and infrastructure sustainability, the ERR supports the development of inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities.
  • SDG 13: Climate Action: The register encompasses studies on climate change mitigation, adaptation, and resilience-building measures, providing valuable data to strengthen responses to climate-related hazards.
  • SDG 15: Life on Land: Research projects within the ERR focus on biodiversity conservation, land degradation, and ecosystem restoration, aligning with efforts to protect and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems.

Through these initiatives, the ERR not only advances environmental research within Gauteng but also contributes to global efforts in achieving the SDGs by fostering international collaboration and providing a comprehensive platform for data gathering and measurement.
