The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is dedicated to enhancing access to basic services for all through a variety of training programmes and community engagement initiatives. These efforts are designed to address specific community needs, promote sustainable development, and empower individuals with essential skills and resources.

Community Engagement Framework

UJ’s commitment to community engagement is structured around three core components:

  1. Service Learning: Integrating community service into academic curricula, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world challenges.
  2. Community-Based Research: Conducting research projects that yield tangible benefits for communities, such as new services, products, or knowledge transfer.
  3. Organised Outreach: Coordinating structured activities that address identified service needs within communities.

This framework ensures that UJ’s engagement is both impactful and aligned with the university’s mission to advance freedom, democracy, equality, and human dignity.

Programmes Enhancing Access to Basic Services

UJ has implemented several initiatives aimed at improving access to essential services:

  • Helen Joseph Hospital Campaign: In collaboration with the Helen Joseph Hospital, UJ students and staff participated in activities to support healthcare services, addressing Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being.
  • Animal Shelter Project: Partnering with Johannesburg Zoo and City Parks, this project focused on biodiversity conservation, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 15: Life on Land.
  • Community Clean-Up Campaign: Engaging with the City of Johannesburg and Johannesburg Water, UJ organised clean-up initiatives in areas like Westbury, promoting environmental health and sanitation.

Collaborations with Community-Based Organisations (CBOs)

UJ actively partners with CBOs to implement projects that have a positive societal impact. These collaborations involve capacity development, networking opportunities, and the sharing of resources to enhance service delivery in local communities. CBOs interested in partnering with UJ can apply through the university’s Community Engagement Unit.

Student and Staff Involvement

UJ encourages its students and staff to participate in community engagement activities. Students can volunteer in various projects, gaining practical experience and contributing to societal development. Staff members are also encouraged to initiate or join existing community engagement projects, fostering a culture of active citizenship within the university community.

Through these comprehensive programmes and collaborative efforts, the University of Johannesburg plays a pivotal role in improving access to basic services, thereby contributing to the upliftment and empowerment of local communities.
