The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment that supports students with disabilities through a comprehensive range of services and facilities. These efforts are primarily coordinated by the Disability Unit, operating within the Centre for Psychological Services and Career Development (PsyCaD).

Academic Support

To promote academic success, the Disability Unit offers:

  • Confidential Consultations: Personalised sessions to understand and address individual needs.
  • Concession Applications: Assistance with securing accommodations for tests and exams, such as extra time or the use of assistive devices.
  • Alternative Format Materials: Provision of study materials in accessible formats, including braille, audio, and electronic text.
  • Collaboration with Academic Staff: Working closely with lecturers and departments to implement necessary accommodations. 

Technological Services

Recognising the importance of technology in learning, UJ provides:

  • Assistive Devices and Software: Access to tools such as screen readers and magnification software.
  • Specialised Computer Labs: Equipped spaces in libraries and PsyCaD offices featuring technology like ZoomText, JAWS, and ClaroRead to support various needs. 

Physical Accessibility

UJ ensures campus facilities are accessible by:

  • Accessible Transport: Support for students with mobility challenges, facilitating movement between campuses, residences, and lecture venues.
  • Adapted Infrastructure: Libraries and other buildings are designed or modified to accommodate diverse needs, including accessible computer spaces and study areas.

Psychological Support

Emotional well-being is addressed through:

  • Therapeutic Services: Counselling and support for students requiring psychological assistance.
  • Holistic Approach: Integrating mental health support with academic and technological services to ensure comprehensive care. 

Community Engagement and Awareness

To promote inclusivity, the Disability Unit:

  • Information Dissemination: Utilises platforms like Instagram to share resources, updates, and success stories, fostering a supportive community. 
  • Collaborative Initiatives: Engages with various university departments and external organisations to enhance support services continually.

Through these dedicated services and a commitment to accessibility, the University of Johannesburg ensures that students with disabilities receive the necessary support to thrive academically and personally.
