The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is dedicated to fostering inclusive dialogue by providing neutral platforms and safe spaces for diverse political stakeholders to engage in open discussions on various challenges. This commitment is evident through several initiatives and events that encourage frank discourse among different political entities.
Seminar on Elections, Democracy, and Anti-Corruption
In April 2024, UJ’s Library and the Department of Politics and International Relations, in collaboration with the European Union Delegation to South Africa, hosted a seminar titled “Elections, Democracy, and Anti-Corruption.” This event focused on analysing the manifestos of major political parties, including the African National Congress (ANC), Democratic Alliance (DA), Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), as well as emerging parties like ActionSA and RISE Mzansi. The seminar provided a platform for representatives from these parties to discuss proposed reforms, assess the credibility of their solutions, and evaluate their commitment to anti-corruption measures. Such an environment facilitated open and constructive dialogue among political stakeholders.
Institute for Pan-African Thought and Conversation (IPATC)
UJ’s IPATC is instrumental in hosting debates on Pan-African political, socio-economic, and cultural issues. The Institute organises public dialogues, conferences, and engagements with policymakers, creating neutral spaces for diverse political actors to deliberate on pressing challenges. For instance, in November 2023, IPATC convened a dialogue on “African Union (AU) Permanent Membership Transforming G20 to G21: Challenges and Benefits,” bringing together various stakeholders to discuss the implications of this development.
Collaborative Conferences Reflecting on Democratic Progress
In July 2024, UJ co-hosted a seminal conference with the National School of Government to reflect on South Africa’s state 30 years into its democracy. The event, themed “Three Decades of Democracy in South Africa: Towards Social, Economic and Global Transformation,” featured key panellists from the public service, academia, and civil society. This conference fostered national discourse through research and dynamic social dialogue, assessing the country’s democratic achievements and ongoing challenges. By facilitating such events, UJ provides a neutral platform for various political stakeholders to engage in meaningful discussions.
Through these initiatives, the University of Johannesburg exemplifies its commitment to creating environments where different political stakeholders can come together, engage in frank discussions, and collaboratively address societal challenges.
