The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has a strong commitment to integrating education for sustainable development (ESD) across its curriculum and ensuring that all students have access to meaningful learning experiences that address the SDGs.

Here are some examples of how UJ is implementing this commitment:

  • Curriculum Integration: ESD is embedded in various courses across all faculties, ensuring that students from diverse disciplines gain an understanding of sustainability concepts and their relevance to their respective fields.
  • Dedicated Programmes: UJ offers dedicated programmes, such as short learning programmes and master’s degrees, that focus on specific aspects of sustainability, providing in-depth knowledge and skills to students.
  • Research and Innovation: UJ supports research and innovation projects that address sustainability challenges, involving students in research activities and contributing to knowledge creation and application.
  • Community Engagement: UJ encourages students to engage in community service and outreach activities that promote sustainable development, fostering a sense of social responsibility and active citizenship.
  • Student Clubs and Societies: UJ has a variety of student clubs and societies focused on sustainability, providing platforms for students to engage with issues, collaborate on projects, and raise awareness.
  • Sustainability Ambassadors: UJ appoints student sustainability ambassadors who promote ESD across campus and organize events and initiatives to engage the wider student body.

In addition to these initiatives, UJ also provides professional development opportunities for staff to enhance their capacity to deliver ESD effectively. The university has also signed the Talloires Declaration, a global commitment to higher education for sustainable development, further demonstrating its commitment to this cause.

Overall, UJ is committed to providing a holistic and transformative education that equips students with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to address the challenges of sustainability and contribute to a more just and equitable world.

Strategic Objective 2: Excellence in Teaching and Learning
