The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is committed to fostering the mental health and well-being of its staff through a comprehensive framework of policies and support services. Recognising the integral role that mental health plays in both personal and professional spheres, UJ has instituted measures to promote a supportive work environment and provide accessible mental health resources.

Staff Mental Health Policy:

In January 2021, UJ implemented the Staff Mental Health Policy, underscoring its dedication to the psychological well-being of its employees. The policy aims to cultivate a workplace culture that prioritises mental health, reduces stigma associated with mental health challenges, and encourages proactive engagement in well-being initiatives. Key objectives include:

  • Supportive Environment: Establishing and maintaining a workplace atmosphere that fosters mental health and prevents discrimination, including bullying and harassment.
  • Awareness and Education: Enhancing employee understanding of mental health issues and promoting behaviours that support well-being.
  • Stigma Reduction: Actively working to diminish the stigma surrounding mental health conditions, such as depression and anxiety, within the workplace.
  • Active Participation: Encouraging staff to engage in various initiatives and activities that bolster mental health and overall well-being.

The policy delineates the responsibilities of the university, the Human Resources Division, line managers, and employees themselves in fostering a mentally healthy workplace. It also emphasises principles of non-discrimination, equality, confidentiality, and voluntary participation in mental health programmes.

Employee Wellness Programme (EWP):

To operationalise the commitments outlined in the Staff Mental Health Policy, UJ offers an Employee Wellness Programme (EWP) accessible to all staff members. This programme provides a range of services designed to support mental health, including:

  • Counselling Services: Confidential telephonic and face-to-face counselling sessions are available, addressing personal and work-related challenges.
  • Legal and Financial Advice: Professional guidance on legal and financial matters to alleviate stressors that may impact mental well-being.
  • Crisis Intervention: Immediate support for employees experiencing acute psychological distress or emergencies.

The EWP is promoted through the Human Resources Division, which collaborates with wellness service providers to ensure that staff are informed about available resources. Managers receive training to identify and refer employees who may benefit from these services, fostering a culture of support and early intervention.

Additional Support Resources:

Beyond internal programmes, UJ acknowledges the importance of external support systems. The university provides information about national mental health resources, such as the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG), which offers counselling and crisis intervention services. Staff are encouraged to utilise these resources as supplementary support avenues.

In summary, the University of Johannesburg demonstrates a robust commitment to the mental health of its staff through well-structured policies, dedicated support programmes, and a culture that promotes psychological well-being. These efforts ensure that employees have access to the necessary resources to maintain their mental health, thereby contributing to a productive and supportive work environment.
