The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is committed to promoting gender equality and actively encourages women to pursue studies in fields where they have been historically underrepresented. This commitment is evident through various initiatives, both within the university and in collaboration with external partners, aimed at empowering women in disciplines such as Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Internal Initiatives:

  • Women for STEM Programme: In 2019, UJ, in partnership with TechnoGirl Trust, launched the ‘Young Women for STEM in Africa’ initiative. This programme targets high school girls aged 15 to 18 from disadvantaged communities who have an interest in STEM careers. The initiative offers workshops on basic programming, circuitry, and robotics, as well as virtual reality experiences and mentorship opportunities with female STEM academics and students.
  • Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship Fund: UJ has established a scholarship fund specifically aimed at supporting women in underrepresented fields. This fund provides financial assistance to female students, enabling them to pursue their academic goals in disciplines where women are less prevalent.
  • Women’s Leadership Development Programme: UJ offers a leadership development programme designed to equip women with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in their respective fields. This programme focuses on fostering leadership qualities among female students and staff, preparing them for advanced roles in academia and industry.

Collaborations and Outreach:

  • TechnoGirl Trust Partnership: Through its collaboration with TechnoGirl Trust, UJ engages in outreach programmes that identify and nurture potential female talent in STEM from disadvantaged backgrounds. This partnership provides young women with exposure to STEM fields, aiming to bridge the gender gap in these disciplines.
  • HeForShe Alliance Membership: UJ is a member of the HeForShe Alliance, a global movement initiated by UN Women to promote gender equality. As part of this alliance, UJ commits to implementing strategies and policies that support women’s empowerment and participation across all academic disciplines.

Through these targeted programmes and strategic partnerships, the University of Johannesburg demonstrates a robust commitment to encouraging women’s participation in fields where they have been traditionally underrepresented, fostering an inclusive and supportive academic environment.
