About Prof Philiswa Nomngongo

Teaching Duties:

Analytical Chemistry 1A (theory (CETTAB1) and practical (CETPAB1)); Analytical Chemistry 1B (theory (CETATA2) and practical (CETAPA2), Analytical Chemistry (theory, CHM7XT1) and Advanced Nanochemistry (NAN9X04, Topic: Applications of nanomaterials in environmental analysis)

Research Interests:

Prof Nomngongo’s research focuses on the application of a “detect, monitor and remove (DMR)” strategy, which enables a holistic dealing with recalcitrant pollutants such as pesticides, heavy metals, per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in water and other complex matrices. Her research is motivated by the fact that climate change and anthropogenic activities have threatened water sources, which endangers the sustainability of both urban and rural communities in South Africa. Furthermore, South Africa still faces significant challenges in achieving water-related SDGs. Therefore, protecting and preserving the ecosystems from potential degradation linked to environmental pollution is urgently necessary to safeguard ecological services such as food and safe drinking water. Fit-for-purpose methods for key pollutants in ecological matrices are required in environmental monitoring programmes. Therefore, Prof Nomngongo’s research continues to apply nanomaterials for other purposes, such as fabricating liquid chromatographic columns and developing advanced analytical methods for pollutant monitoring, among others. In addition, her research focuses on designing nanomaterials for adsorption technology to remove recalcitrant pollutants. Her research comprises the multifaceted interrelationships between the major stages of analytical chemistry, environmental chemical engineering, and nanotechnology, as well as their application in solving water problems.
