Tribute to Prof. Edward Lorenz

Tribute to Professor Edward Lorenz

The Trilateral Chair in Transformative Innovation is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Professor Edward Lorenz on Sunday, 19th January 2025. Prof. Lorenz was an economist, work sociologist, and economic historian whose contributions to innovation studies have shaped the field as it is today. His seminal contributions to understanding the “forms of knowledge and modes of innovation” remain foundational, particularly distinguishing between Science, Technology, and Innovation types of learning and experience-based modes of learning through doing, using, and interacting. This distinction had significant implications for developing regions and inspired a set of literature in the African context.

Contributions:

Prof. Lorenz was appointed Visiting Professor at UJ in 2020 and became a Distinguished Visiting Professor in 2021 until 2024. During this time, he enriched the academic community of the Trilateral Chair with his expertise and generosity. He mentored students and emerging researchers, delivered multiple public lectures and seminars, and led key research on the adoption of advanced digital technologies in South Africa’s manufacturing and services sectors. He was instrumental in setting up and advancing the Chair’s programme of work. His publication record from the last five years is a testament to his deep interest in African innovation dynamics and policy.

Legacy:

Beyond his academic work, Prof. Lorenz was remembered for his kindness and ability to inspire those around him. His dedication to building key academic networks, such as Globelics and Africalics, will continue to influence scholars in innovation and development.
