Phased Out Qualifications
The phasing out of the above programmes will follow the rules and regulations of the University of Johannesburg. The institutional rules and regulations stipulate that it allows:
- A minimum of four (4) years to complete a Bachelor’s degree and a maximum of five (5) years.
- A minimum of one (1) year to complete a Further National Diploma and a maximum of two (2) years.
- A minimum of three (3) years to complete a Postgraduate Degree below Masters (Post-Basic Programme) and a maximum of two (5) years.
- A minimum of one (1) year and a maximum of 2 years to complete a Master’s Programme (Coursework) on fulltime basis and a minimum of one (1) year and maximum of three (3) years on a part-time basis.
The above programmes were indicated as not aligned to the Higher Education Qualification Sub-framework (HEQSF). The Minister of Higher Education and Training has in line with the Higher Education Act of 1997 (Act No. 101 of 1997) declared that the last date of for first time entering students for non-aligned programmes will be 31 December 2019. The regulations for undergraduate programmes have been promulgated by the Minister of Health in 2013, however applications for offering of new undergraduate programme were only submitted to DHET, CHE in 2015 ans re-submitted in 2017 and submitted for accreditation to the South African Nursing Council (SANC) in 2017. Feedback was delayed from SANC however, the Bachelor of Nursing was fully accredited by SANC on the 13 December 2010 for an intake of fifty (50) and fully accredited by CHE in January 2020. With permission from the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof Parekh, the Department of Nursing was allowed to open applications and register the first-year nursing students.
In 2019, the Department has re-curriculated the postgraduate degrees below Masters (post-basic programme) and submitted to CHE. Regulations for post basic programmes, other postgraduate degrees below Masters have not yet been promulgated.
