Take a child to work day 2024

On the 25th of September, UJ’s Faculty of Science, Soweto Science Centre, and the Department of Chemical Sciences hosted an inspiring ‘Take a Child to Workday’ for Grade 10 students from Vorentoe High School.  There was A tour led by Dr. Susan Jacobs, where the students were able to get hands-on experience, and Job shadowed through insightful discussions with CAPP members, including Dr. Monica Barnard, Mr. Luyanda Mazwi, Ms. Dimakatso Maheso, and Ms. Chanelle Gouws. It was truly an eventful day full of learning, inspiration, and a deeper look into the world of science!

Physics Bootcamp 2024

The Soweto Science Centre (SSC) partnered with the Department of Physics and the Centre for Astro-Particle Physics (CAPP) to offer a four-day intensive physics revision boot camp. Held from June 18th to 21st in the Department’s seminar room, the program catered to grade 10 and 11 learners from the SSC, with two dedicated days for each grade level.

The revision sessions tackled challenging topics, focusing on building a strong foundation for understanding core principles. The camp also incorporated exam preparation strategies, equipping learners with valuable skills such as effective question-answering techniques to maximise exam marks.

To conclude each two-day session, the organisers included a fun science demonstration, showcasing the exciting side of science. This engaging approach proved highly successful, with all learners benefiting from the boot camp experience.

Take a Child to Work Day 2023

The revision sessions tackled challenging topics, focusing on building a strong foundation for understanding core principles. The camp also incorporated exam preparation strategies, equipping learners with valuable skills such as effective question-answering techniques to maximise exam marks.

During the tour, the students learned about physics and explored various career paths in the field. The tour concluded with physics experiments conducted by Mr. Murei Mulibana and Mr. Daniel Janse Van Vuuren. The staff and students who volunteered for the event included Dr. Susan Jacobs, Ms. Chanelle Gouws, Ms. Anna Larmuth, Ms. Tamador Aldowma, Ms. Dimakatso Maheso, and Ms. Thando Mothogoane.

Grade 11 Physics Bootcamp 2023

The Grade 11 Physics Bootcamp 2023 was a busy week for Soweto Science students! Held at the Department of Physics, University of Johannesburg from June 26th-28th, 2023, the Physics Bootcamp was a great success.

The program offered learners the opportunity to improve their knowledge of Grade 11 physics, learn about career opportunities in physics, and engage in fun practical activities. The students finished off their bootcamp with some liquid nitrogen ice cream and motivational talks from experts in the field.

We would like to express our gratitude to the following staff and students who volunteered their time to the bootcamp: Mr. Lutendo Nyadzani (Assistant Lecturer and PhD Candidate); Ms. Chanelle Gouws (Specialist Assistant); Ms. Anna Larmuth (Research Administrator); Ms. Monica Barnard (Postdoc); Mr. Mfuphi Nthatsha (PhD Candidate and Tutor); Ms. Dimakatso Maheso  (MSc Candidate and Tutor); Mr. Luyanda Mazwi (MSc Candidate and Tutor)

A special thank you goes to the following invited speakers who shared their knowledge of working in the field of physics: Dr. Sthabile Kolwa (Lecturer at the Department of Physics, University of Johannesburg); Dr. Elizabeth Hays (Project Scientist Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center); Dr. Gopolang Mohlabeng (Assistant Professor at the Department of Physics, Simon Fraser University, Canada). HartRAO 2023

The third-year physics students attended an excursion to the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory (HartRAO) on the 22 of March. During the excursion, the students were given a tour of the facility and learned about the various radio telescopes that are used for astronomical research. They also had the opportunity to speak with researchers and engineers working on ongoing projects at HartRAO, providing valuable insight into the field of radio astronomy.

Shadrack Zibi Secondary School Visit 2022

The students of Shadrack Zibi Secondary School learn more about physics from staff and students from the Department of Physics at the University of Johannesburg. We extend our gratitude to the students and staff who volunteered their time to share their love for physics.

Take a Child to Work Day 2022

Students learning more about physics and what our Centre at the Department of Physics has to offer! A special thank you to our staff and students who took part in showing students around the Centre and Department.
