Do I have to be a UJ Student or UJ staff member to be able to use the Special Collections?

No. Anybody is welcome. Non-UJ visitors and visitors that are not from a CHELSA-affiliated tertiary institution will, however, have to pay a visitor’s fee.

Do I have to make an appointment to visit UJ Library Special Collections?

No. We would however appreciate a call or e-mail before visiting us for research on a specific theme.

I use a wheelchair. Is your area accessible to me?

Yes, you are welcome. Please enter via the Doornfontein Library entrance and take the lift to the lower ground floor.

How do I get access to the collections?

Look at the collections listed and search the UJ Library Catalogue for our book collections.
Material is to be used only in the library.

How do I cite special collections?

Use the reference University of Johannesburg Special Collections (UJSC).
Use the collection reference, file reference, title and date of the document/photograph.

Examples:

  1. UJSC NRC file B1036-04-08 Pad 1, James Gemmill to District Superintendent NRC, 6 March 1964, Labour supply: Distribution of Labour.
  2. UJSC WNLA 59L/8, Report of the leisure activities of Nyassas and Marobi employed in the Transvaal and Orange Free State mines,
