About Ms. Atiyyah Motala
Ms. Atiyyah Motala is a Bachelor of Education graduate in Senior and FET teaching from the University of Johannesburg. In addition, she holds a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in English Literature and a Master’s in Education degree in Education and Curriculum Studies (Educational Linguistics), which is also from the University of Johannesburg. Her final Honours dissertation examined themes of psychoanalysis and feminine resistance in 19th century Victorian literature and was titled ‘Gender and Resistance in John Fowles’s The French Lieutenant’s Woman’ (2019). Her Master’s (full) dissertation centred on social justice education and pertained to student participation and agency in tertiary language learning – ‘Social justice through student participation: Fostering agency in English tutorials at a university’ (2021). She is currently a lecturer and PhD candidate in the Department of English.
Her research areas and interests are as follows:

- South African literature
