Professor Calvin Mabaso is an Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Industrial Psychology and People Management at the University of Johannesburg (UJ). His expertise lies in strategic human resource management, with a focus on remuneration strategies, total rewards, talent retention, and employment relations, critical areas that help organizations achieve a competitive advantage through effective human capital management.
Prof. Mabaso’s teaching philosophy centres on motivating students, stimulating intellectual phenomenon and fostering a feedback-rich learning environment. He integrates theoretical concepts with practical applications, using real-world examples and corporate insights to create dynamic and engaging learning experiences. His teaching approach incorporates diverse activities such as case studies, simulations, team projects, role-playing exercises, guest speakers, and traditional lectures, ensuring students receive a well-rounded education.
He teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses, addressing critical topics like remuneration management, performance management, and employment relations. By combining theory and practice, he equips future HR leaders with the skills to excel in their careers. Prof. Mabaso has successfully supervised numerous Honours, Master’s and Doctoral students and is a reviewer for various international peer-reviewed journals.
Prof. Mabaso’s research is widely recognized, with publications in esteemed journals such as the South African Journal of Human Resource Management, the South African Journal of Industrial Psychology, and international platforms like Emerald and Springer. His work contributes significantly to the field of human resource management. As a certified Master Practitioner of the South African Board for People Practices (SABPP), he bridges academic scholarship and practical application seamlessly. Additionally, he has co-authored several Human Resource Management and Employment Relations textbooks.
In addition to his teaching and research, Prof. Mabaso is an editorial board member for the South African Journal of Human Resource Management and evaluates accredited HR programs across South Africa, highlighting his commitment to shaping HR education and professional practice.
