About Prof Prinola Govenden
Prof Prinola Govenden is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication and Media at the University of Johannesburg (UJ). Her research interests focus on the intersection of Power, Race, and Class in the modern media and has published in numerous high ranking Q1 journals. She also has a forthcoming book (April 2025), Power, Race & Class in the Post-Apartheid Print Media: Transformation in the First Thirty Years of Democracy (1994 – 2024), published by HSRC Press. Her further research projects are: (1) Decolonising the Internet in Africa: Fostering Cultural Inclusivity in the Era of 4IR (2) Decolonising and Reimagining Public Service Broadcasting for Global South Realities. Her academic work regularly features in magazines, newspapers, radio, TV, and online media. Dr Govenden has over nine years of academic experience in the Higher education sector. Since 2024, has been appointed on the Editorial Board of the distinguished and SCOPUS accredited Communicatio: South African Journal for Theory and Research as its Associate Editor. In 2024, she was also appointed by the Secretary General of the South African National Commission for UNESCO (Natcom), to serve on the UNESCO Committee: The Information for All Programme (IFAP), that supports Member States in fostering equitable societies through promoting universal access to information and knowledge for sustainable development.
