About Dr Tathagata Roy Choudhury
Dr. Tathagata Roy Choudhury is a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Geology, University of Johannesburg, APK campus. He studied Geology (B.Sc.) at the Presidency College, Kolkata, affiliated to Calcutta University, and has studied Applied Geology during his M.Sc. at the Presidency University, Kolkata. Dr. Roy Choudhury was awarded his Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, in February 2022, where he studied the sedimentology and geochemistry of authigenic clay minerals forming throughout the geologic past. His doctoral research work involved the identification and characterization of authigenic clay mineral-rich deposits of the Paleogene sedimentary basins in western India and establishing a link between the warm climatic intervals of the past and the abundance of authigenic clay mineral formation and their composition. He has published several articles during his doctoral research. His Ph.D. thesis, titled ‘The formation of glauconite in relation to warming events’ has secured him a prestigious “Naik and Rastogi Award for Excellence in Ph.D. Research” for the year 2020-22. After finishing his Ph.D., Dr. Roy Choudhury was awarded the distinguished ‘National Post-Doctoral Fellowship’ (NPDF) by the Science and Engineering Research Board, Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India, where he has worked on the application of authigenic clay mineral formation and its chemistry to recognize the marine fluxes of certain important elements.
Current Research Interests
Dr. Roy Choudhury is currently working on the understanding of the origin of organic carbon within the Witwatersrand Basin associated with gold mineralisation. In addition to that, Dr. Roy Choudhury is also interested in high precision in-situ mineral chemical analysis using electron microprobe and LA-ICPMS to characterize the authigenic clay mineral formation during the Archean time.
