About Prof Lisa Otto

Prof Otto is an Associate Professor and Deputy Director of the SARChI Chair: African Diplomacy and Foreign Policy at the University of Johannesburg and is co-Editor in Chief of the African Security Review. She holds a D.Litt et Phil in Political Studies from UJ and an MA in International Peace and Security from King’s College London. Her research intersects in the areas of security, diplomacy, and foreign policy, having a particular interest in maritime- and climate politics, and the diplomatic practice surrounding these. Her most recent publications include ‘India’s Ocean: Indian Maritime Diplomacy in the African Maritime Domain (in Stapleton, T., 2022, African Navies: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives), ‘Exploring maritime diplomacy of small island developing states in Africa: Cases of Mauritius and Seychelles’ (2022, Journal of the Indian Ocean Region), and ‘The Nexus Between Natural Resource Governance and Transnational Maritime Crime’ (in Bosilça, R., Ferreira, S., and Ryan, B.J., 2022, Routledge Handbook of Maritime Security). Her forthcoming edited volume (edited with Anja Menzel), Global Challenges in Maritime Security: Sustainability and the Sea, will be published by Springer in 2024.
