About Maria Vaz
Maria is an educator with a passion for teaching and research. Her teaching experience dates back to the early nineties, when she first taught Foundation Phase learners in Township schools. Her growth as a teacher continued with years of experience and professional qualifications. Her career highlights include acquiring a Master’s degree at the University of Witwatersrand, promotion to Head of Department and working as a mentor teacher and Head of Department at the first teaching school in South Africa, Funda UJabule Primary. Her outstanding work with students at Funda UJabule as a mentor precipitated her appointment as a lecturer in the Department of Childhood Education at the University of Johannesburg in 2014. She is currently teaching Sesotho in both the foundation and intermediate phases. She is a member of the PrimTed and a coordinator and writer in the Sesotho and IsiZulu Reading Project (SIRP) in CALT@UJ. She recently graduated with her PhD in the field of reading comprehension.
