About Prof Pinky Makoe

Prof Pinky Makoe is an associate professor in English language and literacy. Her research interests include the politics of English, language and raciolinguistic ideologies, language curricula and policy in contexts of linguistic diversity. Through her research, Prof Makoe aims to contribute to our understanding of how institutional language policies and practices affect children’s learning opportunities. She is a member of the Language and Literacy for Social Justice, bua-lit collective (www.bua-lit.org.za). She has co-edited The Routledge Handbook of Multilingualism, second edition (Routledge, 2024) with Profs Carolyn McKinney and Virginia Zavala.

Research Interests: Raciolinguistics; Language ideologies; The politics of English; Language, literacy and power in education.
