About Prof Anne-Marie Beukes

Anne-Marie Beukes holds an M.A. in Afrikaans from the University of Pretoria and a D. Litt. et Phil. in Applied Linguistics from the Rand Afrikaans University. She is the head of the Department of Linguistics and chairperson of the SA Translators’ Institute (SATI).
She has some 35 years’ teaching and research experience in language facilitation (translation) and language management. Her experience was gained locally and internationally in both the academic and professional spheres. She teaches General Linguistics; Sociolinguistics; Critical Discourse Analysis; Cross-cultural Communication; Translation Studies and Practical Translation at undergraduate level, and Language Planning, Applications and Criticism; Linguistics Theories and Applications, Genre Theory and Applications, Translation Theory, Criticism and History; and Language in Practice at honours level.
Prof. Beukes started her career as a translator with the former Transvaal Provincial Administration. She subsequently taught Speech Science at the University of Pretoria before joining the Department of Linguistics and Literary Theory at the former Rand Afrikaans University in 1986. She also headed the Language Planning section of the Department of Arts and Culture from 1993 to 2003 before returning to the Rand Afrikaans University (now University of Johannesburg). In the Department of Arts and Culture she was closely involved in large-scale language management projects such as the Language Plan Task Group (LANGTAG), the pilot project on the Telephone Interpreting Service for South Africa (TISSA) and a research project on Human Language Technologies (HLT).
She is the author of several scholarly articles (some 17 research articles in peer reviewed journals and 18 in other journals), has contributed to chapters in 8 books, and read a number of papers at language conferences (23 papers at international conferences and 19 at local conferences). She has supervised 19 postgraduate dissertations and one doctorate. She is an NRF rated researcher and is running an NRF funded research project on “Language and identity in Onverwacht”.
A recent research article by Prof. Beukes, i.e. “Language policy incongruity and African languages in post-apartheid South Africa”, published in Language Matters. Studies in the Languages of Africa,40(1), July 2009, 35-55, was included on the list of the five most cited language and linguistics articles in Language Matters during 2010.
Prof. Beukes has served on the Executive of the SA Translators’ Institute (SATI) since 1986 and has been SATI’s chairperson since 2005. She holds full accreditation by SATI (Translation English – Afrikaans). She represented South Africa on the Council of the International Federation of Translators (FIT) for nine years and was FIT Vice-President from 2003-2005. She is currently a member of the FIT Training Committee. She also served on the Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB) from 1996 to 1997.
