Central to the achievement of this critical goal is the provision of adequate funding. As such, one of the University’s Strategic Research Goals is to “increase, manage and structure the external and internal funding for research”.
The Research and Innovation Division is the custodian of research support, including the provision of funding opportunities for the UJ community. The Division manages both internal and external grant applications and awards. Internal grants are awarded through the University Research Committee (URC), a sub-committee of Senate. A large portion of the external grants are awarded by the National Research Foundation (NRF), South Africa’s largest research funding agency. UJ researchers also receive funding from international funders.
The National Research Foundation (NRF) awards funding through a range of initiatives/platforms. Information on NRF funding is accessible via their website: https://www.nrf.ac.za/ and applications must be submitted via the NRF Online system: https://nrfsubmission.nrf.ac.za/nrfmkii/.
