MA in Counselling Psychology (Coursework)

Purpose

After successful completion of this programme as well as the completion of an internship in counselling psychology, the student will be able to write the Board exam of the Health Professions Council of South Africa and may register as a Counselling Psychologist. Students should acquire advanced knowledge and skills regarding relevant explanatory models and master micro skills regarding relevant application models. They should also master conceptualising skills. Students should thus be familiar with the application of relevant context skills to remedial, preventative, curative and fortigenic areas. The programme aims to deliver students with specialised and advanced required knowledge, skills, and applied competencies in various domains of Psychology. Students should also display competence in planning and conducting research.

Admission Requirements

Students should be in possession of an honours degree or an equivalent degree in Psychology.

Selection Process

To gain entrance to the MA (Counselling Psychology) programme, you must apply online to the University of Johannesburg AND with the Department of Psychology. This means there are two processes in the application, and it is crucial that you do both. Your application will not be processed without these two processes.

Your application will undergo a two-step process of evaluation. The first step entails a review of your application documents for eligibility to be invited to participate in step 2. The second step entails our interaction with you during the selection week, whereby suitability and potential for preparation, in context and comparison (thus, competitive), will be determined.
