Purpose

South Africa’s semi-arid climate and rapid population growth have led to significant constraints on freshwater availability, making the storage of water in dams and reservoirs crucial. However, the long-term functionality and sustainability of these water storage facilities are hampered by high sedimentation and siltation rates. In response to this challenge, the South African government has developed the Dam Siltation Management Programme, which includes a draft strategy with tools, models, protocols, and guidelines to effectively manage dam siltation. This strategy aims to address soil conservation problems and support local economies through sustainable land use practices within the dam drainage catchments, with a strong emphasis on stakeholder engagement to ensure all land uses are managed in a sustainable manner. To enable learners to play a critical role in this process, the present short learning programme (SLP) is designed to equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge to operate as competent Dam Siltation Process Controllers. These professionals are expected to activate sediment processes at dams with the purpose of reducing sediment build-up, implement operating rules (under supervision), monitor, and report for informed decision-making and management. This SLP is part of a series of three related SLPs focused on dam siltation process control, aiming to provide a comprehensive approach to addressing the pressing issue of dam siltation in South Africa.
